The 3 Steps to Fix Negative Float (Plain English Summary)

If you are seeing red, check these three common culprits to get your schedule back on track:

  • Remove Hard Constraints: The most common cause of negative float is a specific activity with a strict constraint (like "Finish On or Before") that is physically impossible to meet based on the activities before it. Go to your Activity Details, check the "Status" tab, and change the constraint to "None."

  • Clear the 'Must Finish By' Date: If your individual activities are fine, check the project level. Go to the "Enterprise" menu, click "Projects," and check the "Dates" tab. If there is a hard-coded date in the "Must Finish By" field that is earlier than your critical path, P6 will force everything into negative float. Clear this box and reschedule.

  • Fix Out-of-Sequence Progress: If someone updated a task out of order (e.g., starting a task before its predecessor finished), your logic will break. Press F9, click "View Log," and scroll to find "Out of Sequence Activities." Go back to those specific tasks and correct the relationship ties.
